Last Wednesday evening, students gathered in Wilson Hall for Freedom Fest 2005, a patriotic celebration with a very serious purpose. The event, sponsored by the UAH College Democrats, allowed students the opportunity to relax and have fun while learning about political issues affecting them.

Club president, Sterling High, says that, "the purpose of Freedom Fest was to remind ourselves of what America's real values are-liberty and equality-and remind people not to take their rights for granted but rather to get involved and protect them." To this end there were, "fliers with information on a variety of issues pertaining to liberty such as Civil Rights, privacy, etc. and equality such as education, healthcare, and poverty," available for students to carry home with them. There was also free food, drinks, and music. Additionally, club shirts were available for purchase. Approximately forty to fifty people were present during the event, "a great turn out considering all the activities going on around campus at that time."

High continued, "Freedom Fest has been our second successful event this semester, and I am very excited to see so many UAH students who are willing to get involved and make a difference!" He then continued to state that times have been rough for our nation politically the last few years but, "I think it's important that students are informed...and know that they can do something about it."

Upcoming events for the UAH College Democrats include "Thank-A-Troop Month" in November. On Veteran's Day, they plan to hand out ribbons and poppy flowers in honor of our soldiers followed by an open-mic night at Chan Auditorium. Meetings in the next few weeks are set for October 26th at 7 p.m. and November 1st at 4 p.m., both in Morton Hall, room 337.

Freedom Fest 2005 is over for this year. However, UAH students may now find themselves empowered with information that truly helps them enjoy the freedoms they have.
